Podcast - 79: Out On A High

1979... It was a year surprisingly full of noteworthy cinematic moments. So full, in fact, that it's added eight minutes to the run time of the cast. From the Black Hole, to Phantasm, to Star Trek, to Alien and beyond there was a whole heap of stuff happening in '79 it's a wonder that the 80s didn't suffer from some kind of performance anxiety.

Even so, the end of the 70s was like a universe in which the world of film was rudely torn asunder, alongside some big studio projects that traded strongly on existing properties and accepted wisdom were a number of breakaway hits that would help to shape and define the edge of the decade to come.

It's the final hors d'ouevre before we tuck into the decade for which this podcast was named and the trestle tables of this cinematic smorgasbord are groaning under the weight. Best grab a paper plate and pile it high.

  1. As it doesn't appear to have been remarked upon, and I hope you take this as constructive, when you have guests commenting, such as your lovely wife, they cannot be heard when they are not actually on the microphone. People tend to speak a little faster when casual or excited, and some accents/dialects are a little hard to pick up on, especially extra garbled as they tend to sound as though they are being yelled from another room or in passing. It would be nice to be able to comprehend what was being discussed, otherwise it comes off as little more than dead air and leaves the audience feeling left out, which I doubt was the vibe you were striving to strum.

    http://archive.org/about/faqs.php

"The Internet Archive, where you can sign up for an account and begin uploading files within minutes onto their community audio archive. There are a number of other benefits to hosting your podcast on the Internet Archive. First, the file can be embedded on other websites and blogging platforms, including Blogger, so that they can be shared easily. Second, because the files are hosted on the Internet Archive, they can either be donated to the public domain or shared using a Creative Commons license, which means that your podcasts can be used by others who might share an interest in the topic."

    (2) "A popular alternative is to use Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/ You can also generate embed codes and playlists for your stuff. Note that using an embed code streams the content from Soundcloud, not from your webserver or LMS (Internet Archive does the same thing). This is the "correct" way to integrate media so that your website/LMS isn't eating up bandwidth to serve media."

  3. Hi Anon, Thanks for the crit and the archiving tips. I shall look into the services suggested. As for people shouting from off mic I think it's a habit that's been picked up from an old comms style PC mic which had quite noisy sound quality overall but picked up all sound in a room equally.

I shall inform everyone that the new higher-quality cardioid mic needs you to be stood much nearer to ensure being heard... again. Hopefully having a commenter to back me up might strengthen my message this time ;)

Hope you're enjoying the 'cast otherwise. I guess you wouldn't bother to comment if you weren't, it means a lot when people take some time to drop us a line.
